STUDENT: This next question has to do with politics. If we can fulfill that obligation to cleanse our lives, to live without ego… BAWA MUHAIYADDEEN: That certainly needs to be done. Have you seen how a washing machine works? You drop the clothes inside, put in the soap, and fill it with water. The machine removes the dirt, then it fills with water a second time, rinses the clothes, and finally spins the water out. After the clothes are dry, you can wear them. So the washing machine performs its duty properly, doesn't it? It washes away all the dirt and makes you look nice and clean. Does it keep any of the dirt? No, it removes it and makes you happy. Does it keep any of the pleasure you feel? No, it keeps nothing. If you can function in the same way, it will be good. That is your duty. If a mere bit of machinery can do it, why can't we? We have so much subtle machinery within us. We have to find the appropriate machine for each need that arises and use it to get the job done. So, get rid of all the dirt the world has put inside you. Attain some peace by throwing out those things. If you put them in the machine and get them washed, you will have peace. All the garbage that the world gave you—bring it here and drop it in the washing machine. Clear yourself of all that garbage, and then you can wear clean new clothing and look beautiful. Everything the world gives you is dirt, so it all must come here to the washing machine. The machine will wash it and return it to you nice and white. Then you can give it back to the world as clean white clothes and say, “This is the way the truth is. This is what it is like.” And others can also wear that truth. Muhaiyaddeen, M.R. Bawa.
