Question: I listened to the (prayer) tapes for four months, and now I’d like to try it on my own. If I keep listening to them, I’ll never get the chance to try it myself and see how much I’ve taken in. Bawa Muhaiyaddeen: Until you have absorbed them completely, you must go on listening to the tapes. After you have taken it within, then the tapes can be stopped. Once the record goes inside, the tape outside may be stopped. So till then, you must do it. Until that certitude comes, until that sound is in the heart, you must do it. After that comes, you can stop the outside tapes. Look at yourself like this. (Bawa Muhaiyaddeen cocks his head towards his heart, listening). See if you hear the sound of that record. With that Certitude, with that sharp, subtle Wisdom, with the ears of iman (Absolute Faith), strengthen your Qalb (Inner Heart) and look at your Guru. Say, “My Sheikh, my Guru, you must reside within me. I must hear your voice here!” Look intently and see whether that beauty is there. See whether that sound you are thinking of is vibrating from within. See whether you can see that form. See if you hear the record, if you understand it. Listen with the ears of iman and look with the eyes of grace. If you look then, you will see the form. That becomes a mirror. When you look at it, you will see what is within. You will see that Form. That sound, that record will be played there, and you will hear it with your ears. The whole body will hear it. The whole body will hear that sound. Having heard it, pay attention to it. That sound must first come as soon as you begin the dhikr. That sound will come from within. Both the sounds will join together. You and your Guru will join as one picture, and the two sounds will become one. That sound will begin as soon as you think of it. You will be praying in unity as one—one body, one sound, one link, one voice, one prayer, one worship. Then you are merged within the Guru. If the two become one, then you can do it. Then you do not need the tape. Until then, you have no certitude. Until then, your iman is not clear. Until that happens, your prayer is not clear. Until then, you must use the tapes. It is only after this that you will be clear. Whatever you need to say, immediately look within. If you are speaking with someone and you need to give a reply, you cannot give it. Look at your Guru within your heart a little and ask him, “My Sheikh, My father, You must give the reply. I am not speaking, You must say the answer. What can I say?” As soon as you think like that, immediately you will get the reply. It is then that the vibration comes. Then say, “I am not speaking. You speak. You give the reply.” Then the reply will be given. “M.R.
