Stage Called the World

By: M. R. Bawa Muhaiyaddeen

A kamil shaikh speaks:

Children! Some important principles that we must know lie within us in this very birth into this world, the dunya. We must pay careful attention to them.

In this worldly existence we are continually enacting a drama on the stage called the world—a drama made up of scenes from our life. We wear different costumes, ornaments, make-up, and colors in order to portray each of the different characters we take on at different times. Then we act out scenes that match these characters. We alter our entire form, sometimes even transforming our outer form from male to female or vice versa to play our part. In this way, we alter our natural voice, and our natural qualities and actions, in order to act out a part that is contrary to our true nature.

Now, the actors who change themselves into females for the act lack the discrimination to be aware that they are, in reality, males. And the females are not aware that they are really females acting the part of males. They do not understand the significance of such changes. For, they do not realize the natural differences between a male and a female in their qualities, actions, behavior, conduct, strength, and valor. They are concerned only with praising the excellence of the acting.

But when the drama and acting (adorned by all the make-up) are over, and they leave the theatre, return to their respective homes, and remove the artificial make-up and costumes, then the inherent beauty of their true, natural form (surat) will be revealed, and in that state, their qualities, actions, conduct, and all their millions of artificial acts will be exposed and explained. As a result, those of wisdom, who were observing their acting and the pride they had in their made-up beauty, will now be able to see the real conduct and behavior of these actors and the natural beauty of their form. Recognizing, with their wisdom, the true nature of each of the actors and the limit of their capabilities, these wise ones are in a position to declare, "He can amount to just so much and no more."

It is like this, my children! We have been sent down by Allahu ta'ala Nayan, (1) Almighty God, from awwal (the beginning of creation) to this world (dunya) to act out our lives as performers on this theatrical stage.

Upon arrival here, we, who are human beings endowed with divine analytic wisdom, must act out our roles with conscious awareness of the two things, good and evil (khair and sharr), that constantly arise within our acting. Then our acting will be such that it will demonstrate the difference between these two things.

It is to enact this drama that Allah created us and sent us down to this world, the dunya. Having sent us, He continues to observe the meaning and consequences of our performance, examining our behavior for good conduct, patience, inner patience, contentment, and so many other fine attributes suitable to the characters we are meant to portray in our drama. Observing these with the awareness of His resonance of bliss, He takes note of which of the two roles (good or evil) each character maintains as he acts out his drama. Allah will be pleased with those who perform the khair (good) role, and will shower His praise, titles, and high honors upon them.

Further, one who has accepted the khair role cannot use any make-up or adornment to embellish his act. He must depend solely upon his own form (the natural form that Allah gave him) in performing his exquisite act. Therefore he will need intense concentration, wisdom, perception, awareness, clarity, and steadfastness of certitude in enacting those truths. The use of these qualities in his acting will be what is good (khair) for his role.

If instead of adorning himself with artificial make-up, he wears only Allah's nature of truth as his costume, and acts in a way that beautifies his natural appearance—this is the acting that will reveal the resonance of his divine analytic wisdom (pahuth arivu). For such a person there will be no need to remove any costume, even when he returns to his home. And, since no artificial make-up or costumes have been used to alter his form, he will be unable to act as a woman. Nor will a woman be able to act as a man. Whatever part one portrays, he will always look the same. Even at home, when he rests from his acting, he will look the same, dressed only in the beauty of his natural form. This we must understand.

Allahu ta'ala Nayan—the one who created this drama stage, who fashioned us in such a way that our acting would be appropriate for this stage, and who makes us act out our understanding of the two roles (good and evil)—is the one who will give the reward or prize for our acting, according to the good and evil we portray. He will give us His just verdict on our performance. That Rabb, the Lord who produces this drama and makes us act in it, will give us praise, not only when we are acting but also when we are resting in our dwelling place. Children! We must know this with our divine analytic wisdom (pahuth arivu).

However, my children! To perform the acting that reveals the good (khair) of Allah's truth may prove to be an exacting task for us. Therefore, we who are human beings must understand the significance of this role before we set out to act on the stage of the world.

My children, for this role we must use only the beneficent qualities of Allah's good (khair) as the costume for our body and our inner form, as well as for our qualities, actions, and conduct. We should not use any other type of decoration or ornamentation to beautify ourselves. Only then will the acting be Allah's khair (good) for those of us with the wisdom of insan. And this will be the true meaning of the role we have chosen to portray. We must know this.

1) Allahu: Almight God, the beautiful, undiminishing One; ta'ala: the One who exists in all lives in a state of humility and exaltedness; Nayan: the Ruler, who protects and sustains; Lord: Master over everything.
