The Sheikh

By: M. R. Bawa Muhaiyaddeen

Sheikh (A) Spiritual guide; master; teacher; guru. Everything we look at and study from is a sheikh. Everything that teaches us is a sheikh. However, if one is a true Sheikh, he must have the four virtuous qualities (thänam, nithänam, avathänam, and gnänam) within God’s Truth, justice, commandments, and purity. Thänam is dedicating oneself to God and following His commandments without wavering. Nithänam [blanace] is focusing on God alone, standing in His gaze and walking toward Him without the slightest deviation. Avathänam is concentrating on acting with God’s qualities on the path of justice of God’s Truth. This has to be done with care and caution, for hell is on one side and the world on the other; mind is on one side and desire on the other. One who has attained this state is the sate of gnänam—divine wisdom. Gnänam is the wisdom of the kursï, the wisdom of the qutbiyyat (divine analytic wisdom). One who establishes this state and lives in this way is a Sheikh, the one Sheikh in the world. He is the one Sheikh for the world of souls, this world, and the next.
